The quality of your book happens in the editing.

A well-developed book with a clear core message that keeps the reader in mind, will always get you 5-star reviews.

We help authors write books that receive 5-star reviews so they get noticed, establish authority, and grow their career!
I absolutely knew that Darlene & Nicole where who I needed for my project, but as a first time author and new to the coaching speaking world, I truly had no idea how professional their services were until I saw what else was out there. If you want a book that represents you professionally, I highly recommend the Authors Collaborative.
What is editing?

Inspirational non-fiction editing requires a combination of technical expertise, a deep understanding of the subject matter, and the ability to collaborate effectively with authors.

Non-fiction editing is a complex, challenging, and rewarding process. You’ll deepen your impact and own your unique message with confidence.

Learn more about the different types of editing below.

Line Editing

Includes the detailed comments or suggestions line by line

Review Editing

Includes a report, notes, & recommendations

Structural / Development Edit:

We look for...

  • Logical order/ flow of events or unfolding of details for the reader
  • Is there anything missing/ anything repeated
  • What is the main/ core message (recommend removing anything confusing/diluting)
  • Line comments + review editing

Voice & Flow (copy editing)

  • Line editing
  • Creates clarity in sentence structure
  • Gives your book a consistent voice & cohesive feel
  • Removes anything ambiguous or off-topic

Authority & Reader

  • Does this book position you as the expert?
  • Do you engage readers in a regular fashion by talking directly to them?
  • Do you recap the main core message & promise by tying everything together regularly?
  • Does a final check on subtle mentions of your expertise and programs without sounding salesy

Proofreading & Grammar

  • This is the final stage before formatting.
  • Review with the assistance of Grammarly to make any final suggestions on your choices
  • Not all grammar suggestions by software are appropriate for your book. These are done with your voice, flow and subject matter in mind
  • This is where we can break the rules but we have to be consistent in our presentation
  • There are still 2 or more proofreads after formatting but these are done by the author and not the editing team. Post formatting on the electronic doc. Post hard copy author proof before publishing. (you will want to do this until you find no more errors)
Publish an engaging, informative, & impactful book you're proud to promote.
Everything changes once you write your book

Self-published doesn't mean "low quality"

Self-published means you're acting as the publisher.

Everything changes once you write your book

You must make the same decisions a traditional publisher would.

The publishing house doesn't bring success. Making good decisions and taking action does.

Everything changes once you write your book

We help our authors produce high-quality manuscripts that are engaging, informative, and impactful so that as the author you can be proud to promote.

We help our Authors produce high-quality manuscripts that are engaging, informative, and impactful so that you as the author you can be proud to promote.

A great book integrates your business, your offers & your future vision.

Self-published doesn't mean "low quality". It means you are acting as the publisher.

You can and should make as many decisions for a professional book the same way a traditional publisher would.

(the actions of a traditional publisher is what brings success NOT the publishing house)

Why us?

Writing business nonfiction means your book needs to be a game-changer. It needs to launch your career to the next level.

That’s what we do.

What should I look for in an editor?

  • Establish a positive relationship. (which is why we created the Authors Collaborative)
  • Create effective communication. (we provide written proposals and checklists to keep your manuscript on track)
  • Conflict resolution. (our goal is to create a most positive experience for our writers while still producing a professional project.)
  • Provide constructive feedback. Editing is a challenging time for the author. We try to be as supportive as possible. We function as a team, with the end goal of you producing a 5-Star book. So if you work better with one of us specifically, you can choose to work with them. We highly recommend popping into the Collaborative (to navigate the overwhelm of edits).

How long does editing take?

Average time & expertise per project 40-50 hours for 30,000 words.

Projects take about 4-6 months to complete and vary greatly on the queue and/or your rewriting time.

If you're now wondering why editing takes so long...

Most first time authors do not understand the editing process.

If authors wrote their book without a plan, without the reader in mind and without a clearly developed structure framed around one core message, the structure edits will be extremely heavy.

To save time and money in editing, it is beneficial if the author understands what is the expected structure of a book.

It is harder to rewrite a book than to write it.

What's the difference between copy editing and proofreading?

Copy editing and proofreading are both important stages in the non-fiction editing process, but they serve different purposes.

Copy editing involves reviewing the manuscript for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors, as well as checking for consistency in style, formatting, and tone.

Great copy editing requires experience & skill. We focus on inspirational non-fiction. Nicole is our head copy editor for voice & flow. She is uniquely concerned with how the tone and flow will make the reader feel. She brings a very strong element of creative writing techniques to this edit. She is extremely gifted and will create a consistent manuscript.

Proofreading, on the other hand, is the final stage of editing and involves reviewing the final manuscript for any remaining errors or inconsistencies. During this stage, the editor checks for typos, misspellings, formatting errors, and any other minor issues that may have been overlooked in previous stages of editing.

How much does it cost?

The average price for a 30,000 Word count inside our membership (you have developed and written your book with us) is

 X $0.025 = $7500

Outside the membership 30,000 x $.35 = $10,500

Some other costs to consider are:

Cover design ($250+)

Marketing costs (varies greatly)

Formatting ($200+)

What is the rate per hour? Rate per word?

Editing is a creative process that requires transition time into the manuscript and time to process after each editing session.  Our rate per hour includes the transition time, the coaching time, the administrative response, and our team discussion time. The price per project will differ depending on the levels of edits.  Our rate per hour is higher because we can do it in less hours. You are paying for the speed and depth of expertise our team approach brings.

Rates per word are priced for quality professional standards. This is the most accurate way to price a project. The price will differ from project to project which is why we always start with and require an audit.

Why is there such a big cost difference outside the membership?

The writers that develop and write their books with us, have a much higher quality book to begin with. Their books require less editing.

And the feedback process is much quicker, for these writers know exactly what we expect from a professional book.

And lastly, we already have a deep understanding of where the book is going before we even read. They have been sharing it with us for months.

The first thing is we are reading your book two times before we even begin to edit. We need to get a sense of the whole book before we can make editing recommendations.

You can learn more about the membership here.

Can't I just hire someone on Upwork or Fiverr for a lower rate?

We help authors not only get a professional book but a successful one, with their business in mind. We get authors a better return on investment.

Many of the editors on these lower cost sites may not have English as a first language, degrees, or experience. We aren't just editing grammar, we focus on your overall message, flow, and voice to help you create a book that impacts the reader in a cohesive and authentic way.

We not only bring editing experience we are bringing years of both speaking & coaching industry plus our combined 40+ years education in inspirational non-fiction.

I have a low budget but I need help editing. How should I use my budget wisely?

We help authors monetize their message and book before they even publish.

For a low-budget option to get started, you can learn about our 5-Step self-paced developmental workshop here.

We also offer a 2-in-1 Editing service. We'll run your manuscript through a grammar proofing software with the assistance of one of our editors. The feedback will include some voice & flow as well as final proofreading suggestions. The rate starts at $.09 per word and includes a 2-hour feedback session. Schedule a call with us here to learn more about this option here.

We'll be offering a self-editing challenge soon. Send us an email here to let us know you're interested!
